This morning as I pondered what to share next in this series of Connecting with your Guides, I thought I would digress and share some backstory. As I embrace my own gift and abilities as a psychic I have become more aware of how it is I experience the realms or dimensions of life. Lately I have been struggling with being overly sensitive to energy and being “alert” or “on” too often. Let me see if I can explain.
For most of us, we are alone or when we are with others our awareness is about ourselves and also about the other person. The way I image it is two people across from each other, using all of their senses to connect with the other. Being connected to Guides and others who have crossed over much of the time creates more of a sense of being aware of a whole other level. Rather than focusing across at someone, for me it’s more like a channel going up that is open all the time. Because I am open and responsive to what I am being guided to do, it would be like being “on call” all the time.
Although much of my psychic ability opened up after a head injury (age 14) where I was in a coma for two weeks, I was already psychic and receiving information before then.

When I was a little girl, I remember sensing God in the heavens. Later, as an adult I could identify Guides too. It is common for your awareness to leave your body when you experience some kinds of trauma. It is like you are above watching yourself. This is called “Dissociation” and it is on a continuum from daydreaming to Dissociative Identity Disorder or what was previously called Multiple Personality Disorder. As a mental health counselor I saw this experience often with women and men who were sexually abused.
How it happened for me though, was around listening to my parent’s fight. That is not really a fair way to say it. It was more listening to my dad abuse my mom. Full disclosure here. I loved my dad. He was my main nurturer and taught me a lot. He was a binge alcoholic and blacked out when he drank and was abusive to mom.
As a child, sitting in my bedroom feeling scared and helpless, I prayed. Desperate in an attempt for help, the channel between heaven and me was firmly paved! I remember one night when they were fighting, I went out into the front yard and yelled up to heaven at the top of my lungs, “God, you stop this!”
Although this is a sad story, through counseling and journaling, I healed these memories and I value the connection I made with God. I learned to trust God (Jesus) and Guides over humans. This correlation between trauma and God though I believe set me on alert. I sense the suffering of the world and at a level beyond my conscious awareness, like it is on a whole different level.
The process today in Connecting with your Guides and those who have crossed over has to do with your own experience.
Close your eyes and bring up an experience that you want to focus upon. This can be whatever comes to you – positive or negative.
Now write a letter to God, your Guide, or Loved One who crossed over in your journal. Tell them what it was like for you, what you are feeling now, how you adapted, changed, grew from the experience and ASK for what you desire. Whether you want an intercession for yourself or someone else or you want help in shifting your resistance. Allow them to help you!
Let go and don’t micromanage the response to your healing or request. It will come.
Hope this self-disclosure was helpful.
Bless your Heart!

I love the idea of writing a letter to a loved one who has crossed over. They do talk to me, most of the time unbidden, so it takes me somewhat by surprise. But I just love the idea of writing them letters.
candesscampbell says
Wouldn’t it be great Susan to sit with other family members and do this to honor your loved one during a holiday. I think I will do this in a group around Mother’s Day for those whose mothers have passed.

It is so often the negative experiences in our lives that shape who we become and how we cope, Candess, as your story shows. As painful as some of the memories can be, it is heartwarming when people can use them to help others. I do believe we all need to tap into a higher power to get through.
candesscampbell says
That is my hope Tamuria – that others can identify and heal as well. Thanks for sharing!

Guides can appear with their messages in so many different forms. My favorites are birds which perch nearby. As I watch, a message is usually communicated with a feeling of great love. I’ve learned to be more aware of the moment rather than trying to seek out a specific kind of guide.
candesscampbell says
I totally agree Joyce. I once had a blue heron fly with me as I walked home along the river. Isn’t it amazing!
Robin says
Thanks for sharing your story. Reaching out to God seemed to help you find your way – how awesome is that! I lost both my Mom and Dad too soon. Mom made cross stitch pictures for each of my boys, and I loved chatting with those pictures. Guess that was my way to channel.
candesscampbell says
That is beautiful Robin. Happy you are able to keep the memory alive!

I’m glad you shared this information and back story with us, Candess. The article makes me better understand some of your articles and what you do. Is there a difference between being intuitive and sensitive? If you open yourself up to communicating with your Guides, does that make you open to negative forces too? I believe that being gifted with extra sensory perception is something you’re born with or acquire as the result of a specific incident, but I’ve read that you can also develop these skills. It’s so fascinating, and I enjoy seeing a bit of your world each week.
candesscampbell says
Meghan that is a good question. Many intuitives are very sensitive and it can be confusing to pick up information and not know what it is. That experience generally sends people searching for answers which is good! I think as sensitivity as being a physical experience that leads to opening up the senses to receive more information. There are 4 Ways to receive information: Clairsentience, Clairaudience, Claircognizance and Clairvoyance. You can find more information about these by signing up on my site. As far as protection, I do teach people to protect themselves through zipping up (an upcoming blog) and using golden white Light. More to come about this. And yes! You can develop your skills. My strongest archetype is a Spiritual Teacher so I will be sharing about this in the future. Thanks for all the questions!

Hi Candess,
So vulnerable here! That’s quite the trauma both physically (with the coma) and emotionally. I can remember some similar stories of my own. Thank you so much for sharing.
candesscampbell says
Interesting we share similar stories Geniece. I love sharing my stories if it helps others to normalize their experiences or know how to heal themselves.
Teresa Salhi says
That is soooo beautiful Candess. I feel so much compassion in your words. Thank you for sharing your story and touching my heart.
candesscampbell says
Thanks for the feedback Teresa. Life is good!
Apolline Adiju says
I am happy you shared this with us, and I also love the idea of writing a letter to a loved one who has crossed over in your journey.
Kristen Wilson says
Wow.. never knew that you were in a coma for 2 weeks.. that is crazy.. but it seems you were to have go through that so you could help others… that evidently was your purpose. Great explanation on how to channel our feelings by journaling, not just writing but writing to someone.
candesscampbell says
Yes Kristen, it was quite an experience. I write about that and other really “weird” experiences in my books. Sometimes sharing our stories makes it safe for others to share. Let us know how your journaling goes!
Tandy Elisala says
Candess, thank you for this timely article. My Uncle passed away a few weeks ago and I love your idea of writing him a letter. SUCH a great idea:-) I find that when I let go of the how and the outcome, the Universe always gives me exactly what I need. I love connecting with my guides and angels and my loved ones that have crossed over. I think we are all intuitive and have the ability to connect with others, we just don’t always know this or want to… or believe it! I think your gifts are precious and love that you shared this guidance with us.
candesscampbell says
Tandy, thank you for your generous sharing. My heart goes out to you about the loss of your uncle. It’s nice to connect with another Spirit Sister.
Anne says
Thank you for sharing your story. What an amazing journey! Connecting and talking with God definitely helps me find my way every single day.
candesscampbell says
Anne, so happy you have a beautiful connection as well!
Lorii Abela says
I have always believed that our guides are always there though most of the time humans have not paid attention to them. I think they do a great job of giving unconditional love.
Jennifer Quisenberry says
It’s so interesting to hear your back story. I wonder sometime if all of us are able to connect if we just tune in and listen. I know I’ve had moments where I’ve felt like I might have connected with something – just a brush with it – not like what you experience. But I do wonder if we can learn to nurture that ability.
candesscampbell says
Absolutely Jennifer. I love teaching others to connect with their loved ones!
