Have you ever typed a document and kept changing the paper margins to get more information on the page?
Recently, it became apparent to me that I was living in the margins.
In my case, the margins became almost non-existent! I put so much into a day that I had no margin left for something else. If there was a last minute invite to a concert or movie I couldn’t go. There was no room for an emergency.
I had no margins!
Years ago when I used to use a paper calendar, I scheduled in “shapeless time.” That was for whatever I wanted, whether it was to finish a project, read a book or take a walk. It didn’t matter. It was MY time.
I fell out of the habit of scheduling time for myself without noticing it.
How do you integrate time for yourself?

Using the Soul Stem process, grab a notebook or your journal and write for 10 minutes completing each of the following Soul Stems.
- If I had more time…
- The one fun thing I want to do is…
- When I am alone…

That’s a great analogy. Living in the margins. I think I do that too. I need to make my margins quite a bit wider!
candesscampbell says
Jennifer, I would be curious to see what happens when you do this. For me the stress melts away. Have fun!

I start my day with 15 minutes of clearing for the day. I honor “me” time. My day is centered around that which brings me happiness. Smiling, rendezvousing with others and turning contrast into desires. My life is about perspectives. I appreciate your share. I have shared this with others who will meet you where you are. Thank you for sharing.
candesscampbell says
Celea, the morning mediation for me is really helpful to start my day right. Happy to see you have your morning ritual too! Thanks for sharing!

Interesting that I should come across this. This is Exactly what I do and will go back to when the kids go back to school. A couple of times a week during my working hours I’ll schedule an hour or two to do something non work related, no kids, just me. It’s important to find that time.
candesscampbell says
That is great Sonya. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to carve out time with children present. Yea for back to school for moms!

Some great ideas here! Writing things down really helps to clarify things. I do take a regular lunch break and use that to do my favorite hobby – cross stitch.
candesscampbell says
Carole, I too find sewing is so relaxing in the breaks. I like to hand quilt.

These are great questions for reflection. I LOVE your analogy of living in the margins. This is SO true. You’ve inspired me to do a facebook live video about this idea of taking more time for you. I asked the question, If I had an extra hour a day, I would… in my facebook group and got some great answers. Thanks for the reminders.
candesscampbell says
That’s great Tandy. We all continue to need this reminder!

A great way to really check in with one’s self. Daily, random, loose writing is so freeing and picking up a few guiding ideas here is great for me.

I love this topic. I have been consciously making sure that I get to do the things I like to do and also enjoy some “me” time. I like socializing and trying new things so I have a list of activities I appreciate so that I can alternate those accordingly.
Apolline Adiju says
Hahahaha I felt like you were talking to me directly because I do that all the time. Sometimes I am drowned in so much work that I work till early mornings. I guess I need to grab the Soul Stem process and start creating time for myself.
candesscampbell says
Apolline if you decide to use the book I have a closed FB group you can join as well! Enjoy!

I love the idea of scheduling shapeless time. I had just remarked to my husband that I missed those days when I just spent the afternoon shopping. Guess I need to move out of the margins

Over time, I have found that I can cut back on volume, improve quality of what I am doing, and earn the same amount. So, every few months, I cut back a little more, and monitor. This has given me my time back, and I will continue to cut back until I find that sweet spot. Loving have me time again!
Brenda Niemeyer says
What a great exercise! Especially for small business owners who can get caught up in 24/7. Love the idea and plan to thing about what margins I need in place as my kids head back to school.
Kristen Wilson says
I was wondering where you were going with the margins.. but it makes total sense… and yea, I need to be better at more me time.. like now, here I sit on my laptop (away from my office/desk) and am replying to blogs in front of the TV.. still working but kind of relaxing? lmao. Maybe I need to make a margarita.. great idea! lmao
candesscampbell says
As I am reading this I am working on my website and catching up with a TV program. I get it Kristen. I don’t allow myself to take the computer outside though. When I sit in the garden it is pure relaxation!
Indira Pierrot says
I give myself one day a week that is just me time. I may choose to spend it with friends or family but it just needs to be a day I feel like I can relax
